Antares and Jay are an exceptional couple. Not only are they super excited about the birth of their first child, but they are also easy going, full of personality, and they love horror! For that reason, we decided to meet in Georgetown for Antares’ maternity portrait session. Not only is Georgetown filled with wonderful urban and historical backdrops, but it also has the famed steps as seen in the final scene of The Exorcist.
We met up on an early Sunday morning at Starbucks. I chose the time and location for a couple reasons. First, being so early, I knew that we would need some caffeine to get us started. Second, parking in Georgetown is very easy that early. And third, the warm early morning light would be great to shoot with.
I decided to shoot using natural lighting for this session, supplementing the shadows with a reflector (held by my trusty assistant/partner Cheri). After fueling up at Starbucks, we began walking around the streets of Georgetown. I quickly found a few locations that I thought would make good spots, including a side alley and a small bridge over the C&O Canal.
After our first couple of locations down and a costume change, we headed down towards the famed steps. Being it was early in the morning, there were quite a few eager runners sweating their way up and down all 97 steps. We only made our way up to the first landing and chose that spot for a few portraits. After that, we found a cobble-stone street around the corner and finished up the session there.
I had a great time shooting with both Antares and Jay. They were both eager and very responsive to the camera. It always makes my job easier when your subjects are so fun to work with.
